Storytelling is the only trait common across all successful leaders.
For as long as we've been around, stories have connected us, inspired us, discouraged us and motivated us.
Stories are at the essence of anything we create. Anything that has ever been made—from art, tools, software, to robots and beyond—has emerged from a story. A story of need, want, wish, luck, emotion, discomfort, pain, happiness... (add your own noun here).
Companies are no different. They are born from stories—of longing, frustration, discovery, and courage. They are shaped by founders who carry a spark that won’t let them sleep until they try.
We all have stories to tell. We don't all know what they are, how to tell them nor when to use them.
People don’t connect with businesses—they connect with stories. Not all stories need a hero. But some do. Not all stories need a beginning, a middle and an end. But some do. Not all stories need to inspire. But some do. How do you know which ones?

Many of the highest-impact people in history have been communicators and storytellers
In the 20th century, smallpox killed around 400 million people — far more than died in all the century’s wars and political famines.
Although credit for the elimination of smallpox often goes to D.A. Henderson (who directly oversaw the programme), it was Viktor Zhdanov who lobbied the World Health Organization to start the elimination campaign in the first place. Without his communication skills, smallpox’s elimination probably would not have happened until much later, costing millions of lives, and possibly not at all.
Being able to tell an appropriate story in the right way, at the right time, to inspire, motivate, change, educate or entertain is a life skill. Storytelling skills are crucial for business and for change.
